Suhakam's HR Commissioners - appointed in June...cannot take effect from 26/4/2010...

No Chairman & HR Commissioners since 24/4/2010....

The term for Suhakam chairman Tan Sri Abu Talib Othman and his 15 commissioners ended at midnight April 23.

On April 21, The Star reported that the Suhakam Selection Committee had finalised a list of nine candidates on April 19 and submitted it for the Prime Minister’s consideration, after which he would recommend names to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for appointment. - Star, 7/6/2010, Poser over Suhakam commissioners

Then, suddenly Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib announces the new Chairman & SIX(6) HR Commissioners only. [I thought that the earlier report said that the term of  16 Commissioners ended - so should we not be having 16 new Commissioners??]

Oh yes, in Malaysia it is not the Commissioners that democratically chose their own Chairman. The government decides on the Chairman. The previous one a former Attorney General, and this time a former Foreign Ministry official?...Noting that the 1st chairman was a former Deputy Prime Minister...it looks that this new appointment indicates the reducing importance of the Malaysian Human Rights Commission (SUHAKAM)..

You announce the appointment on about 8/6/2010 --- and say that the appointment takes effect from 26/4/2010 - what does this mean? They could not have started doing their work as Commissioners since 26/4/2010...and the delay in appointment has effectively delayed SUHAKAM's work for almost 1 1/2 months. 

Are you now going to pay these Commissioners their salary/allowances since 26/4/2010? That will be a great injustice... a violation of human rights...for after all, let's not forget that we are talking about the Malaysian people's money not the PM's personal money.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has announced the appointment of new members for Suhakam with Tan Sri Hasmy Agam becoming the new chairman.

Hasmy is the Institute of Diplo-macy and Foreign Relations (IDFR) executive chairman, which is under the Foreign Ministry.

The former chairman of Suhakam was Tan Sri Abu Talib Othman.

The members of the commission are Muhammad Sha’ani Abdullah, Prof Datuk Dr Khaw Lake Tee, James Deva Nayagam, Prof Datuk Dr Mahmood Zuhdi A.Majid, Jannie Lasimbang and Detta Samen.

In a press statement to Bernama here last night, Najib said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had consented to the appointment of the new Suhakam members for a three-year period under the Suhakam Act 1999.

The Prime Minister said the appointment took effect from April 26, 2010.

The Suhakam team led by Abu Talib ended its term on April 23 and it had been without commissioners for 45 days.

Earlier yesterday, Suhakam secretary Hashimah Nik Jaafar said further action on a memorandum submitted to the commission on May 24 over the arrest of four Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia students during the Hulu Selangor by-election could not proceed because it had no commissioners, reports Shaila Koshy.

“Our investigation unit has looked into the matter and we have also spoken to the university authorities.

“We are now waiting for the new commissioners to take office so we can table the matter and they can decide on the next course of action,” she said.

The memorandum submitted by student movement Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia and the four students centred on the arrests of political science students Hilman Idham, Ismail Aminuddin, Azlin Shafina Adzha and Woon King Chai for allegedly contravening Section 15(5) of the University and University Colleges Act.
