Terengganu lawmakers to get 167pc salary bump while Minimum Wages remain at RM900 since 1 January 2013?

Will this massive pay rise finally get us FULL-TIME Peoples' Reps - no more distracted in their other businesses, professions and money-making activities? A 'Wakil Rakyat' must be a full-time peoples' reps, and hopefully then they will be prepared better to give us better arguments and intelligent debates.  Hopefully, they will use this moneys to employ qualified researchers and staff... Maybe they will stop being absent from Parliament - maybe they will use the extra money to better communicate with the people - and be more transparent in sharing the answers the government gives to their question...

Will we get better MPs - or will things just remain the same? Now, what about increasing basic minimum wages which have been the same RM900 since 1 January 2013 - 2 years 4 Months ++ now...

Well, Malaysian Members of Parliament, Senator and some State Legislative Assembly persons are 'very happy' with their MASSIVE pay hikes

Members of Parliament (MP) allowance increasing to RM16,000. [Note that their allowances now is RM6,580-59.

Senators  allowances increasing  to RM11,000

The new salary scheme is a near three-fold increase from the previous rate of RM6,508.59, and higher than the initial plan to raise MPs' remunerations to RM11,000 when the amendment Bill was tabled in November last year.

Salaries and allowances for senators ― which was initially set to increase to RM7,000 - will now also nearly triple to RM11,000 from the previous rate of RM4,112.79.

Apart from their basic salary, MPs currently receive a monthly allowance of RM5,000 for entertainment, driver's pay, travel and handphone bill.

They also receive an allowance of RM200 a day when attending Parliamentary sittings and a daily allowance of RM150 to attend meetings with government agencies.

Changes to the initial amendment Bill also bumped up the monthly salaries of the president of the
Dewan Negara and Dewan Rakyat speaker to RM31,000. The new salaries were initially set at RM20,000, up from the previous rate of RM14,907.20 listed in the Act.

The Senate deputy president and Deputy Speaker of the house of representatives, meanwhile, will earn RM22,000 a month and not RM16,000 as initially proposed, more than double the current salary of RM10,847.65.

With the revised salaries and allowances, the federal government expects to incur an additional expenditure of RM31,971,981.36 a year.

While tabling the Bill for a second reading yesterday, minister in charge of parliamentary affairs Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said the amendments were made due to current factors which were challenging to federal lawmakers, national news agency Bernama reported.

“In addition, the duty of the Members of Parliament is getting heavier in carrying out the high hopes of the people, and this will boost the spirit of the elected representatives to work with more commitment and dedication,” he said.

Putrajaya tabled the Bill in the last parliamentary meeting after lawmakers from both sides of the divide called for a review of the initial proposal to review their salaries and allowances.

The last amendment to federal lawmakers’ salary and allowances was a mere increase of RM700 more than a decade ago in 2002.

It was again proposed in 2011, but shelved amid fierce opposition over the suggested quantum.

Putrajaya announced an increase to allowances for the country’s 222 federal lawmakers and 70 senators in Budget 2015, apart from pledging to review the salary schemes of its administrative members, including that of the prime minister, his deputy and all other ministers.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said during the tabling of Budget 2015 that the MPs’ allowances would be increased from the equivalent Grade 54 to the equivalent Grade Jusa C, while senators’ allowances would be increased from the equivalent Grade 48 to the equivalent between Grade 54 and Jusa C.

The Public Service Premier Post (Jusa) is the premium grade position for very senior positions in the civil service.

Meanwhile Grades 41 to 54 are for management and professional positions in the civil service.

According to a 2013 circular by the Civil Service Department, the minimum pay for the Jusa C level is RM7,189.63 - Malay Mail, 10/5/2015

Terengganu lawmakers to get 167pc salary bump

KUALA LUMPUR, May 14 — The Terengganu legislative assembly agreed today to hike the salaries of all state lawmakers by up to 167 per cent.

According to The Star Online, this will affect the salaries of the state mentri besar, all state executive councillors, Speaker, deputy Speaker and all assemblymen.

There are 32 state assemblymen in the Terengganu legislative assembly.

The news portal reported that the motion for the pay rise was passed today after all state lawmakers voted in favour of it at today’s assembly sitting.

Terengganu state exco for trade and industry Datuk Tengku Putera Tengku Awang was quoted saying the last salary hike was in 2004.

“The decision to raise the salaries is due to the burden of increased duties and responsibilities,” Tengku Putra was quoted saying after assembly.

Terengganu assembly passes pay rise for reps

The Terengganu state legislative assembly sitting yesterday passed the Members of the Administration and State Assemblyman (Emolument) (Amendment) Enactment 1980 to enable the state assemblypersons to receive a new salary scale equivalent to that of a Grade 54 government officer, effective Jan 1, 2015.

The chairperson of the state committee on Industry and Trade, Tengku Putera Tengku Awang, said with the passing of the enactment, all the 32 assemblypersons would receive a new salary of RM11,000 compared to only RM4,112.97 or equivalent to the salary of a Grade 44 government officer previously.

“Based on the responsibility, sacrifice and best service (of the assemblypersons) the state assembly sitting passed the (amendment) bill, the percentage (increase) is certainly high, but it is commensurate with the services and sacrifice rendered by the elected representatives and the current situation,” he told reporters after the conclusion of the state assembly sitting in Kuala Terengganu yesterday.

Menteri besar Razif Abdul Rahman (photo) had tabled the amendment bill yesterday which was seconded by Tengku Putera, and unanimously passed by the assemblypersons including those from the opposition.

Razif said Terengganu was among the last states to pass the amendment and the emolument to be received by the Terengganu assemblypersons was still lower compared to those received by assemblypersons in Sarawak and Selangor.

“We are still low compared to Selangor (RM11,250.00) and Sarawak which is the highest at more than RM15,000 per month,” he said.
