Pannir Selvam Pranthaman, A Malaysian, is set to be executed to death in Singapore on 20/2/2025 - and the question is what has PM Anwar Ibrahim done to save the life of this Malaysian? He has not said anything at all(I believe) - and what efforts have the government taken.
PM
Anwar Ibrahim’s cares about Najib’s sufferings in prison but does
Malaysia also care about Malaysians overseas at threat of being executed
to death like Pannir Selvam..(MADPET)
Anwar 'claims' he has good relations with leaders of other nation, respect - but if and when Pannir ends up being judiciously executed by neighbouring Singapore, a member of ASEAN - we will know that Anwar Ibrahim is far from being the RESPECTED or influential leader he claims to be.
Did Anwar ask the Prime Minister or the President of Singapore to not KILL this Malaysian? Did Singapore not listen? Should Malaysians now BOYCOTT Singapore for their audacity of killing Malaysians.
It would have been good if PM or government said that we did our best, this and that, but still failed. Then, should not have Malaysia taken action against Singapore?
The crime is DRUG TRAFFICKING - serious, yes - BUT was there any evidence to show that he was really a drug trafficker or a Kingpin or a member of an organised criminal group? Did they not just rely on the LEGAL PRESUMPTION that if a certain amount of drugs are found in your possession, that means you are a DRUG TRAFFICKER?
Well, if you committed a CRIME, you need to be PUNISHED but not kill.
A Filipino facing execution in Indonesia is alive because Philippines managed to save her life - by way of a prisoner transfer?
What about Malaysia and PM Anwar Ibrahim - are you NOT CAPABLE to do the same and save Pannir's life?
The Philippines has agreed to Jakarta's proposed transfer procedures for the repatriation of a Philippine woman who was sentenced to death for drug trafficking, Indonesia's senior minister for law and human rights affairs said on Friday.
Yusril Ihza Mahendra told Reuters that he and his Philippine counterpart would sign the agreement later on Friday, and said it was expected that the prisoner, Mary Jane Veloso, could return to her home country before Christmas.- China Daily. 6/12/2024
Drug Trafficking – Post Umi Azlim reflections demand abolition of Death Penalty
In 2017, Umi Azlim Mohamad Lazim, 24, a university science graduate from a poor Malay family of rice farmers, was sentenced to death for drug trafficking for having 2.9 kilograms heroin in her luggage when she was arrested at Shantou airport. She was allegedly carrying the luggage for an acquaintance, not aware of the contents. Her death sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment, which often happens in China on review. In 2019, Umi reportedly said that she may be released by 2025 for good behaviour(NST,6/10/2019).
Umi Azlim’s case and others did cause a change in position of the Malaysian government and even political parties like PAS and UMNO about the injustices of death penalty for drug offences. Members of the Cabinet then reportedly said ‘…young Malaysian girls, some fresh graduates, were easily conned by men from the syndicates to travel abroad with a package…’ The report also stated that ‘…Malaysian lasses are an easy lot to charm. They are easily smitten by sweet words and gifts, making them an easy target for drug-trafficking syndicates looking for mules…’ (Star, 1/11/2009, Malaysian girls easily duped).
It not just young women, but man and women of all ages that can easily be duped, or maybe even make wrong choices by reason of poverty and desperation. It is also an acknowledged fact that most arrested, convicted and on death row for drug trafficking are really ‘mules’ and small players, and not the kingpins and masterminds involved in drug trafficking. These ‘big bosses’ may then simply to find drug mules from those who are not well educated, ignorant or those who are desperate for quick money.Single Mother of 9 sentenced to death for drug trafficking raises urgency for abolition of death penalty, and need for just sentences for drug offences ?
How WEAK Anwar Ibrahim is will be soon known...How strong is his 'Influence' will be known?
A regional NGO has called for the Home Ministry's intervention to bring death row inmate Nagaenthran K Dharmalingam back to Malaysia as a final bid to save him from execution next Wednesday in Singapore.
Anti-Death Penalty Asia Network (Adpan) submitted a memorandum to the Home Ministry calling on the ministry to engage with its Singaporean counterpart for the prisoner transfer process on humanitarian grounds. - Malaysiakini, 22/4/2022
Will Pannir be saved OR will PM ANWAR be shown to be a FAILURE. Philipines just saved a life of a Filipino about to be hanged in Indonesia, can Malaysia save the life of Malaysian about to be executed in Singapore??
Summary
Four MPs have urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to intervene in the scheduled execution of Pannir Selvam Pranthaman in Singapore, advocating for his return to Malaysia to serve his sentence while assisting in investigations.
Pannir was convicted of drug trafficking in 2017 but was denied a certificate of substantive assistance despite cooperating with authorities.
With Malaysia having abolished the mandatory death penalty, the MPs and other activists argue that Singapore should reconsider its stance.
Four government MPs have urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to intervene in the upcoming execution of Pannir Selvam Pranthaman, scheduled for this Thursday, in Singapore.
Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh expressed hope that Pannir would instead be allowed to return to Malaysia to serve his prison sentence while providing information to assist investigations related to his case.
“We are, respectfully, of the view that Pannir was a drug mule and ought not to be hanged while members of drug syndicates continue to freely roam and likely re-strategising on how to prey and recruit unsuspecting victims from Malaysia to help them in transboundary transportation of drug packages, totally unaware of its contents,” he said at a press conference today.
In 2017, Pannir, 30, was convicted of acting as a courier to import 51.84g of heroin, an offence that carries the mandatory death penalty. The crime took place at the Woodlands checkpoint on Sept 3, 2014.
Ramkarpal added that the family had lodged a police report on Feb 12 regarding information on a Malaysian recruiter and to inquire about developments in the case.

They later received confirmation from the police that investigation papers had been opened and an investigating officer had been appointed - after a 10-year wait.
On Feb 16, the family received Pannir’s execution notice, scheduled for Thursday.
Ramkarpal said that given Pannir’s cooperation with Malaysian and Singaporean authorities in their investigations, the MPs hope that neither country will proceed with the execution and that Putrajaya will intervene.
“Although the Singapore High Court concluded that Pannir was found to have transported and delivered drugs under section 33B(2)(a)(i) of the Misuse of Drugs Act, 1973, he was not issued a certificate of substantive assistance.
“(The certificate) is a recognition by the public prosecutor in Singapore that Pannir had cooperated by providing vital information to assist in drug trafficking cases in Singapore,” he added.
‘M’sia can advocate through Asean’
Subang MP Wong Chen noted that with Malaysia chairing Asean this year, Anwar should use the opportunity to advocate for better handling of cases like Pannir’s.
“Malaysia, as you know, has abolished the mandatory death sentence. We kept it as an option and, in fact, had frozen all execution.
“It is a good step, and I think Singapore can follow these steps. They can be tough on their laws.
“We are not here to interfere in their system, but I think they can get some goodwill from the international community, especially since they are such an advanced, developed country,” he added.

Wong also urged Singaporean MPs to speak up on the case.
“This is a bipartisan issue, so hopefully, our fellow MPs in Singapore can respond the same and also talk to their government because we want to see the new administration of Lawrence Wong be better or more forward-looking,” he said.
Bukit Bendera MP Syerleena Abdul Rashid, Batu MP P Prabakaran, and former Batu Kawan MP Kasthurri Patto were also present, along with nine NGOs, including Suaram, Bersih, and Hayat, who expressed support for the statement.
‘My brother is depressed’
Pannir’s sister, Angelia, who was also at the press conference, said her brother is in distress.
“He’s in a state of depression and also does not know what to do because all his appeals have been exhausted.
“Even within the legal framework, he was not assigned the certificate he should have received for assistance inside Singapore.
“My parents and my sister flew to Singapore yesterday. Only I am here, trying,” she said in tears.

Three years ago, Pannir wrote a poem for his fellow Malaysian inmate, Dharmalingam Nagaenthran, who was executed on April 22, 2022, after the Singapore Court of Appeal dismissed his final appeal.
Then 33 years old, the mentally impaired Nagaenthran was on death row for trafficking approximately 42.7g of heroin into Singapore.
