3 suspected 'IS militants' - guilty or not? Charge them and accord them a fair trial?

3 SUSPECTS Arrested - and remember that everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Now, it is not the police that decides whether one is a 'terror' suspect or not? It is not the Attorney General or the Public Prosecutor that decides whether one is guilty or not? It is not the Minister or the Prime Minister that decides...

So, we will only believe that some is guilty if he/she has been accorded a fair trial...The worry now is that these 'suspects' may not even be charged in court and given a fair trial - they may simply be DETAINED WITHOUT TRIAL using POTA (Prevention of Terrorism Act)?

A big announcement to the media about this 'accomplishment' by the Malaysian police, that was also covered by a lot of international media - so let us all be kept informed about what happened after that...or was it just some PR exercise? Now, if they really were 'terrorist', then charge them and accord them a fair trial... And, if investigations reveal that they are really innocent, make sure to inform the media of this...And, do not simply put them under 'Detention Without Trial' - which does not accord them even the right to challenge the allege justifications for their arrest..

The suspects were picked up by the Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division in the city, Selangor and Pahang between Aug 27 and Aug 29.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested three suspected Islamic State (IS) militants who were planning attacks on entertainment outlets, a Hindu temple in Batu Caves and police stations.

The trio were planning to attack their targets using grenades and firearms on the eve of National Day.

They were picked up by the Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division in the city, Selangor and Pahang between Aug 27 and Aug 29

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the three suspects had been receiving orders from IS militant Mohamad Wanndy Mohamad Jedi.

“The first suspect – a 20-year-old man – was detained in Selangor on Aug 27 with a K75 grenade and a pistol along with 9mm bullets.

“We believe he obtained the weapons from a middleman,” Khalid said in a statement on Wednesday.

The two other suspects, aged 27 and 20, were detained on Aug 29.

“They were planning to go to Syria once they managed to attack the targets,” he said. - Star, 31/8/2016

 

 

Malaysian Police foil terror attack in capital, three suspected ISIS militants nabbed

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Malaysian police have said that they have managed to successfully foil a planned terror operation and have subsequently made three arrests. 

The police said that three suspected Islamic State (ISIS) militants were arrested for planning an attack on a prominent Hindu temple, Batu Caves in the capital, Kuala Lumpur. The radicals were also said to be targeting entertainment venues and police stations in the capital on the eve of the country’s 59th Independence day.

According to a statement issued by Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar, the attacks being planned in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor State and Pahang State between August 27 and August 29 were foiled by the Special Branch Counter-Terrorism Division.

Abu Bakar further stated that the three suspects were planning to use grenades and firearms that were supplied and sent via courier to them by Muhammad Wanndy Mohamed Jedi, a Malaysian national fighting with Islamic State in Syria. 

Wanndy has been involved in plotting previous attacks in predominantly-Muslim Malaysia - including a grenade attack on a bar on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur in June, which was the Islamist group's first successful assault in Malaysia.

He further elaborated, “The three suspects planned to go to Syria to join the terrorist group with the help of Muhammad Wanndy after launching the attacks.”

Abu Bakar said that a 20-year-old lorry driver was the first suspect to be arrested after being detained in Selangor State on August 27 with a K75 grenade and a pistol along with 9mm bullets. Two other men arrested, were detained in Kuala Lumpur and Pahang on Monday, one being a butcher and the other a drinks seller aged 20 and 27 respectively.

Earlier this month, Malaysia identified 68 Malaysians who were said to be planning to leave the country to join ISIS and revoked their passports. 

Meanwhile, in March this year, the country’s intelligence said that 18 Malaysians were killed while fighting alongside ISIS in Syria. In addition, seven Malaysians were said to be killed while carrying out ISIS-led suicide bombing attacks. - The Malaysia, 31/8/2016
