KUALA LUMPUR, April 10 — Police have confirmed that a suspended senior officer arrested over a string of armed robberies in Kepong was previously attached to the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman.

City police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said the suspect, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), had been serving in the Commercial Crime Investigation Department prior to his suspension on January 23, the New Straits Times reported today.

“The suspect is believed to have played a central role in orchestrating the group’s operations, including planning and coordinating their movements,” Fadil was quoted as saying.

The DSP was among six suspects — including two bodyguards — detained over multiple break-ins targeting expatriate homes in Kepong, Fadil previously said.

The group, aged between 31 and 51, allegedly posed as police officers to gain entry into the homes, with one suspect wielding a pistol-like object to intimidate victims.

Investigations indicate the syndicate made off with high-end vehicles — including a Toyota Alphard, Rolls-Royce and Bentley — as well as a safe, RM24,200 in cash, US$1,200, jewellery and two gold bars, bringing total losses to over RM4.4 million.

Police also found that the bodyguards involved had used legally licensed firearms during the robberies.

Fadil described the case as a serious breach of integrity within the force, stressing that such misconduct undermines public trust and violates the core duty of police personnel.

He added that authorities will take firm action regardless of rank, and that investigations into the case are ongoing. - Malay Mail, 10/4/2026

KUALA LUMPUR: Eight PKR Members of Parliament said they will write to DAP and Amanah leadership, asking them to use their positions in the government to pressure Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to suspend Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.

Speaking at a press conference today, Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli said the group will also call for an independent investigation into the allegations against Azam.

Rafizi, a former economy minister, added that as senior government backbenchers, they will write to all MPs who are not ministers or deputy ministers.

"We will write to them, across parties, starting next week, to seek their agreement in urging that Azam be suspended immediately and that an independent investigation be initiated without delay," he said.

He said the move aims to ensure that recent Bloomberg reports are not ignored and that a comprehensive, independent and transparent investigation takes place.

The MPs also plan to call on parliamentarians, regardless of party affiliation, to return to their constituencies and hold briefing sessions to explain the allegations to residents.

"We will also write to the electoral reform group Bersih, for them to consider leading and organising a peaceful assembly," Rafizi said, adding it would be the first such assembly to be held during the month of Ramadan.

The other PKR MPs endorsing the statement were Rodziah Ismail (Ampang), Wong Chen (Subang), Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (Setiawangsa), Lee Chean Chung (Petaling Jaya), S. Kesavan (Sungai Siput), Tan Kar Hing (Gopeng), and Zahir Hassan (Wangsa Maju).

Rafizi added that he will personally lodge a police report against Azam following allegations in the Bloomberg report that the anti-graft agency's head interfered in a firearms-related case, allowing the police to conduct a thorough investigation.

During the press conference, Rafizi cautioned Anwar not to repeat the mistakes of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in the 1MDB scandal.

"Every revelation made by Bloomberg warrants an immediate criminal investigation. Moreover, these disclosures point to abuse of power and widespread corruption within the country's enforcement agencies, including alleged links between the MACC and a businessman said to have close ties with organised crime groups.

"As Anwar once proclaimed, the people are the judges of the nation. In the end, it will reach the people as well. It is just a matter of time.

"We hope this matter receives serious attention from the government, especially from the prime minister. It would be highly unfair if Pakatan Harapan and he were penalised during the general election over allegations involving a civil servant like Azam."

Earlier today, Azam in a statement said he is ready to be investigated by any committee set up by the government to examine matters relating to his shareholding.

Azam said he was fully open to scrutiny and had nothing to hide, adding that all his financial and asset declarations were made in accordance with prevailing public service regulations and through prescribed official channels.

"I am fully open to being investigated by any independent committee established by the government to specifically examine matters relating to my shareholding.

SHAH ALAM: There is no immediate need to suspend Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki from his duties while a special committee investigates allegations reported by Bloomberg.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the special committee, to be chaired by the Chief Secretary to the Government, would first scrutinise the matter in accordance with established procedures before any further decision is made.

"We will follow the normal process first. The Chief Secretary has given preliminary information and said the committee should be formed, then examine the case together with the Attorney General and, I believe, the Public Service director general," he told reporters here after attending Friday prayers at Pusat Islam Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, Shah Alam.

When asked again whether Azam should take leave during the investigation period, Anwar reiterated that the matter should first be properly assessed.

"Let the review take place first. We must determine whether the allegations are serious and whether there is a basis before taking further steps.

"We cannot act merely because there is pressure."

Anwar said that the investigation would be conducted transparently and openly to ensure the issues raised are properly examined.

"We discussed that the review must be truly transparent and open so that we can properly assess the matter," he said.

Anwar also cautioned against allowing the issue to disrupt the overall functioning of the MACC, particularly at a time when the commission has intensified its anti-corruption efforts.

"There are attempts to restrain or undermine enforcement when action becomes firmer and tougher against corruption. Certain parties with vested interests who protect corrupt individuals will use this opportunity."

He added that the investigation into the allegations should not be misconstrued as an effort to shield corrupt practices, noting that anti-corruption enforcement must continue without fear or favour.

"As you can see in Parliament and outside, including among politicians and some non-governmental organisations, the pressure against corruption is often minimal. Even in high-profile cases, support is limited.

"I have told the MACC to ignore external pressures and carry out its duties bravely and firmly. This country must be saved from the widespread scourge of corruption."

Earlier, the cabinet agreed to establish a special committee, headed by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, to investigate allegations against Azam regarding past shareholdings in a financial services firm.

Government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil confirmed that the matter was discussed during today's cabinet meeting.

Fahmi said that once the investigation led by the Chief Secretary is completed, the report will be presented to the cabinet for any follow-up action.

He said this is to ensure transparency and integrity in the investigation process.

Bloomberg reported on Feb 10 that Azam was listed as holding 17.7 million shares in Velocity Capital Bhd, citing a corporate filing with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM).

The article reported that the shareholding was disclosed in Velocity Capital Bhd's annual return lodged on Feb 3 last year.

Based on the company's share price at Monday's close, the stake would be worth about RM800,000.

Checks on the company's web portal revealed that it is listed on Bursa Malaysia and was previously involved in transportation, logistics and ceramics manufacturing.

It is now moving towards financial services, including moneylending.

On Feb 12, the news portal again alleged that a number of MACC officers were linked to a network of businesspersons accused of colluding and using intimidation tactics against company executives.

Azam told the New Straits Times that he had nothing to hide regarding the RM800,000 worth of shares, saying that the transaction had been properly declared.

He said the shares were purchased and disposed of within the same year.

Describing the reports as malicious and misleading, Azam said he is considering legal action over their allegedly defamatory nature.

Azam has since issued a letter of demand (LOD) to Bloomberg over what he describes as a defamatory article alleging that he held millions of shares in a financial services company.

His solicitors, Zain Megat & Murad, are also seeking RM100 million in damages for alleged injury to his reputation and professional standing.
